Remote Controlled Boats are more for hobby sailing, but some like to race their boats also. Consequently, there are various types available, depending on budget, area of water and the local area ordinance. Very broad classification can be made for RC boat parts – Nitro Powered, Gas powered, Sail boats and Electric boats.
Nitro rc boats are among the fastest and therefore most difficult to control. These are run by a fuel blend of nitro, methanol and lubricating oil. The engine is usually a nitro marine type. The nitro marine engine will have a tuned pipe, cooling head, air filter, fuel filter and a carburetor. The engine will require to be tuned up to work at its best. These are meant more for racing and usually handled by experienced boaters. Nitro rc boats will require open wide water space, since they can easily reach speeds of nearly 30mph.
RC Gas powered boats are similar to their Nitro cousins, only they run on gasoline.
RC Sail boats are more for relaxation and recreation. In this type of boats there are no motor or engine. These are simple to set-up and maintain, only requiring the radio control to sail and control the boat.
Electric rc boats are the easiest to handle. They are quiet, the electric motor not generating much noise. This boat will require motor, re-chargeable battery pack and a battery charger. These boats can go pretty fast, something like 15-20mph. They also require a wide open water space.
RC boats hulls have different type of designs. Those with Deep V hull type are easiest to control. They are relatively stable in choppy or rough water conditions. But this hull design also generates a huge drag which gives it speeds which are comparatively slow.
RC boats designed with the catamaran type hull have lower drag and therefore can go faster. But then, stability is low therefore better boating skills are needed.
RC boats designed with the hydroplane hulls have absolute minimum drag and therefore can go at top speed. But they are complicated to handle and are therefore best for boat modelers who are experienced.
For constructing of your own RC boat, you might first select the electrical and other RC boat parts. Majority of the RC boat kits include instruction manuals to help when assembling your boat parts. When assembling the boat parts, work calmly and methodically, following the instruction manual to get it right the first time. In case you need to paint the body, always cover the electrical and mechanical parts of your RC boat.
Some of the important parts will need minor adjustments before your boat is ready. The main propeller shaft will require lubrication with marine grease before you dip the boat for the first time into water. The marine grease will seal the tube of the flex shaft, preventing water from entering the hull. Additionally, the grease helps lessen friction and minimize wear and tear, thus enhancing the life of your RC boat parts. Batteries will need full charging before first use. This is true for the battery for the glow driver also. Tuning the nitro engine will require breaking in enabling it to run faster and last longer. To allow a perfect fit between sleeve and piston within the engine crankcase, the engine should be allowed to idle while consuming several tanks of fuel.
