Learn the Best Boat Parts!
Boat parts can be manufactured from nearly any materials. For centuries, every ship was made of wood, but the discovery steel changed shipbuilding. Almost all large craft are built from steel with most small craft being constructed from plastic, aluminum and fiberglass. Wood is still used for some ships. No matter what is used to build a boat, the parts of a boat are known by certain terms.
Main Boat Parts
The main boat part of any ship is the hull. Similar to the foundation of a house, the hull provides the structure for constructing the ship. The shape of the hull is dependent on the purpose of the boat and where it will be sailed. River boats and barges have flat, wide hulls so they can operate safely in shallow waters. Deep water vessels have deep hull for navigating through ocean waters. Attached to the hull on sailboat is a keel. The keel is a narrow, vertical fore-aft structure mounted in the center to provide stability.
In nautical terms there is no front, back, right or left. The front of the ship is known as the bow and the back is the stern. If you are going to the stern of the ship, you are moving aft. Subsequently, if you are heading towards the bow you are going fore. The right-side is the starboard-side. The left-side is known as the port-side. The flat rear is the transom that provides mounting for the rudder which is the main steering component. Marking lights are mounted on the stern (white light) and the bow (red and green). The starboard side light is red and the port-side is green. This allows other boats to determine which side of the boat they are seeing as well as the length of the craft.
The floors of the ship are referred to as decks, the uppermost called topside or top deck. The very front of the top deck is bow pulpit. Any access to lowers decks is through a hatch. These can be open portals or vertical or horizontal doors. Rooms inside ships have unique names. Sleeping quarters and offices are cabins. The kitchen is the galley. Engines, generators and pumps are all located in compartments. The “Con” is short for the control room. This is where a ship’s navigation, communication, steering and power controls are located.
Boat Engines and Propellers
Every ship must have power to push it along. If it is powered by an engine, then it is driven by propellers. That is why; all the boat parts should be in best accordance to provide the full support to the engine. Still numerous ships are pushed along by the wind that is captures in sails. The sails are supported on long beams called masts that will be explained later. The sails are raised up the masts by ropes or cables. Each sail has its own name that depends on the design of the sail system. Sailboats usually have an auxiliary engine system to propel the boat when there is no or insufficient wind.
Boat Parts and Accessories
The boat parts and accessories that are nominated for small boats vary accordingly. Large ships usually do not need to have main sail and jib sail. This is due to the engine power in these ships and they also not require the air support to drive the ship in the required pattern. Boat parts that should be used in small sized boat are keel, rudder, stern and so on. These boat parts if chosen in good quality not only add in the stability of the boat but also give more convenient driving.
Boat Parts and Special Accessories
Most of the latest boats have installed navigation systems in them that exclusively guide the sailor about the exact direction. Racing boats finds great applications of navigation system because of the perfection with which this system can locate the target area. The range of this system varies but most of them work using GPS system and have the working range of 10 meters/ but this is not the threshold limit and the modern systems have got an extended range for such navigation systems.
The mast of the small boat is among the major boat parts that play important role in sailing the boat smoothly. The jib and main sail totally depends on the stability of the mast. That is why the best boat parts can be regarded as best only if they are centered by an excellent quality mast that is erected in the best orientation. The mast should be placed by a professional because any mishandling of this boat part can cause difficulty in driving the boat.
